Business closings don't bring North Creek down.
By ROSEANNE FOGARTY
Your
Nov. 18 cover article, "North Creek, staggered by blows, tries to rise
up from the canvas," implies that North Creek is sinking to its knees
because two entrepreneurs closed up shop. Nothing could be further from
the truth about this vibrant Adirondack town. North Creek is the seat of government for the town of Johnsburg, and home of Johnsburg Central School, with a comfortable 96 percent graduation rate, and college attendance of close to 80 percent. It has a remarkably fine town library, and a gorgeous community center with regular art and photo shows and a theater/lecture hall that seats 150, where chamber and piano concerts, plays and lectures are regularly scheduled. Our Town Theatre Group does staged productions and a film series. There is a small historical museum at the railroad depot. There are several churches, restaurants, motels, bed and breakfasts, and shops, as well as a supermarket and a large hardware/general store. There is a local health center, a senior services center and a high-quality nursing home. There is downhill and Nordic skiing, snow-tubing, skating, white-water rafting, canoeing and kayaking (North Creek hosts the annual White Water Derby in May), plus hiking and swimming. The circus comes to town every couple of years, and the Fourth of July barbecue with fireworks is something special. The challenges of life in the North Country can engender a community vitality you don't always find elsewhere. A few businesses may come and go, but North Creek will be just fine.
